Belongs to the class of ‘dietary supplements’, primarily used to treat nutritional deficiencies. Nutritional deficiency occurs when the body is unable to absorb or get enough nutrients from food.
- Inhibits diffusion of Nh3, blood & enhances diffusion of Nh3 from blood to gut
- Cause blood ammonia levels fall in hepatic encephalopathy
- Enables protein diet to be tolerated
- Decrease in PH in colon causes decreases in absorption of ammonia lans & other toxic nitrogenous compounds
